If you’re a business owner in Wareham looking to serve alcohol, now is the time to act!
The town currently has eight available liquor licenses. These licenses are divided into two categories:
- Four (4) licenses available exclusively for the Wareham Village zone.
- Four (4) licenses available for businesses anywhere in the town of Wareham.
With a limited number available, interested parties are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible through the town’s online licensing portal. The four Village zone licenses will not be available after December 31, 2025, unless they have been applied for before that date, as they were granted under special legislation.
Understanding the Special Legislation
Liquor licenses in Massachusetts are regulated at both the state and local levels, with the number of licenses in each town typically capped based on population. However, in late 2022, Wareham’s special legislation allowed for a restricted number of additional licenses to be issued exclusively for economic development purposes—particularly to attract more restaurants, bars, and social venues to the area.
The new licenses were officially approved for use on December 28, 2022, marking a significant step toward revitalizing Wareham’s hospitality sector.
This presents a rare opportunity for business owners who may have missed the initial rollout or who are now considering expanding their operations!

How to Apply
To be considered for one of the available liquor licenses, applicants must:
- Submit an online application through the town’s online licensing portal.
- Provide business details, including ownership structure, location, and intended use of license.
- Demonstrate compliance with town zoning laws and alcohol service regulations.
- Undergo a review process that will include public hearings and approval from the Select Board, as well as the ABCC.
Helping People Discover Wareham
The availability of these licenses presents a unique opportunity for business growth, particularly in Wareham Village. By allowing more establishments to serve alcohol, the town hopes to foster a vibrant dining and nightlife scene, attract tourism, and enhance economic activity.
For businesses, securing a liquor license can lead to increased revenue, higher customer retention, and expanded service offerings. For residents and visitors, it means more options for dining, socializing, and entertainment!
With only eight licenses available, competition is expected to be high. Business owners interested in applying should act quickly to secure their spot in the approval process.
