The Wareham Redevelopment Authority (WRA) is inviting Wareham residents and visitors to participate in an upcoming meeting to discuss the Wareham Village Coastal Access Project, an initiative aiming to transform and revitalize Wareham’s waterfront along Merchants Way.
Set for Monday, November 18, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Warren’s Harborview (located at 59 Main Street), the meeting offers a chance for the public to share thoughts and feedback before the WRA moves forward with the project’s design and funding plans. For anyone interested in the development of Wareham’s village area and enhancing access to the Wareham River, this is a unique opportunity to help shape the town’s future!
Background
The Wareham Village Coastal Access Project has been evolving as part of the WRA’s broader Wareham Village Redevelopment Plan. Its main objective is to create a scenic, accessible boardwalk connecting the historic Tremont Nail Factory to Besse Park, linking the village center with the waterfront. This enhanced access to the riverfront has the potential to spark economic growth, drawing residents and tourists eager to take in scenic views and enjoy recreational activities. Features like a fishing pier and kayak launch are planned to encourage outdoor engagement, while a new pedestrian crossing would make the waterfront area both safe and accessible.
Key Features
1. Scenic Coastal Pathway and Boardwalk:
The boardwalk creates a continuous waterfront trail, offering scenic river views and providing an inviting space for walking, relaxation, and recreation.
2. Fishing Pier:
This accessible fishing pier enhances engagement with the river, inviting locals and tourists alike to enjoy recreational fishing along the Wareham Village waterfront.
3. Kayak Launch:
A dedicated kayak launch will offer easy access to the river, supporting water-based recreation and eco-friendly tourism activities for kayaking enthusiasts.
4. Safe Pedestrian Crossing over Railroad Tracks:
Addressing existing safety concerns, the project includes a secure pedestrian crossing over the nearby railroad tracks, ensuring safer access to the river by preventing illegal crossings.
The Importance of Public Input
Since the project is still in the design phase, feedback from the community is crucial to aligning the development with residents’ needs and expectations. While the WRA has contracted with design firms to shape the project, the specifics are still flexible, and the meeting offers an opportunity for locals to voice support, raise concerns, or suggest features they’d like to see included.
Community feedback will guide the WRA in making design choices that reflect Wareham’s identity and residents’ needs. A survey has also been created to collect additional insights from those unable to attend the meeting, allowing more voices to be heard as the WRA navigates the path forward.
